  DAIRY QUEEN CROWNING

Congratulations to Taylor Klemm daughter of Scott and Jeri Klemm of Browntown who was crowned the Browntown Dairy Queen. Taylor will be a sophomore this fall at the Blackhawk School District.

 MUSEUM NEWS

Everyone is invited to a special Military uniform showing at the Browntown Museum on this summer at the Museum. The Museum is open every first and third Sunday of the month through Labor Day from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

The Museum Board has completed the

“Welcome to Martintown” pictorial book.

The pictures in the book give a glimpse back in time to an era when all the small towns were booming. Did you know that you could ride the Illinois Central train from Martintown, WI to Winslow, Ill for only 6 cents. The book is available at the Museum and at the Browntown Village Hall.

This is the second book in a series the Museum board is putting together featuring many old pictures of the early 1900’s.

Thank you to all our friends for sharing these wonderful photographs for us all to enjoy!

BROWNTOWN PARK

The Browntown Park is a wonderful place to enjoy a family gathering. Now with two shelter houses you can easily book the event. Call Joan Pickett for more information at 608-966-3273.

A BIG THANKYOU to the Park Board for another spectacular fireworks display.

The Park Board would like to thank everyone who participates in their various fund raiser events especially the raffles which help pay for the fireworks display.

Summerfest was held Father’s Day weekend and many enjoyed the activities.

The antique tractor pull was canceled on Friday, June 18th due to rainy weather, however was held a week later. Everyone enjoyed the antique tractor competition.

The Park is looking especially beautiful this year with the newly redone flower bed and block wall near the upper shelter house. Also, if you haven’t noticed take a walk in the park to see the murals Nate Norter has repainted on the upper bathroom near the shelter house. Thanks Nate for brightening up the Park!

SEWER UTILITY NEWS

The final payment for the Browntown Sewer Utility $12,439.66 has been sent to the Mortgage Company.

A letter was found in the files dated December 31, 1980 written by Village Clerk William Burwitz informing the property owners of the Village that the sewer system was completed and scheduled for start up after the first of the year. He further states the total cost for the project was estimated at $882,000 with the Village share being $248,000.

The property owners were reminded that the Contribution-In-Aid-of-Construction charge was due before August 1, 1981. Every family was asked to pay $500, commercial property was asked to pay $750 and the school was asked to pay $1000. The monthly bills due were set at a minimum monthly charge of $5.66

($16.98 quarterly) and a $1.70 charge per thousand gallons of water used each month to cover operation and maintenance expenses.

Today the flow charge is $4.44 per thousand gallons of water with a quarterly charge of $75.50 per resident. The sewer utility is completely financed by user charges and no tax money is used to pay for the utility.

The Village Board is now looking into reducing the cost of running the aerators at the sewage ponds. Another cost reduction might be the construction of a wind turbine to generate the electricity used to run the aerators. The wind generator is quite costly however to run the aerators alone runs around $7,000 per year. The board is considering all alternative to help decrease the cost of operating the sewer utility.

Now that the Sewer Utility loan is paid off money can finally be put aside for emergency breakdowns and future expenditures.

Staying HydratedChildren are more vulnerable to the effect of dehydration than adults. They have a lower capacity for sweating therefore kids’ bodies don’t cool down as efficiently as adults.

Older adults fluid requirement is the same as younger adults. Elderly adults tend to drink less than their bodies need for a number of reasons. With age, the body loses its ability to detect thirst. Some of the elderly also suffer from poor memory, immobility, or illness – all of which can result in decreased fluid intake. In addition, certain medication can also block the thirst mechanism.

Signs of Dehydration:

  • Increased thirst
  • Light-headed and dizzy
  • Fatigue
  • Headache and muscle cramps
  • Affected physical and mental performance
Tips for Staying Hydrated:* Have a beverage with every meal and snack

* Eat more fruits and vegetables

* Keep a water bottle or beverage in you

FLU SEASON IS HERE

Health experts’ best advice is stay home if you’re feeling sick! Help stop the spreading of the H1N1 flu virus. WASH HANDS! WASH HANDS! WASH HANDS! Wisconsin has had 6,432 confirmed cases of H1N1 (swine flu) with 8 deaths. Green County has confirmed cases and no one is immune.

The virus is spread by respiratory droplets from the mouth during a sneeze or cough, and can infect other people up to six feet away. The virus also can be transmitted from infected surfaces to the next person, who then touches an eye, nose or mouth. H1N1 symptoms include fever of 100.4 or above, sore throat, and coughing as well as headaches, runny nose, body aches and fatigue, and vomiting or diarrhea.

County Emergency Management’s Tanna McKeon advises everyone to prepare emergency kits for their home, which should include supplies for at least three days; and don’t forget your pets. When ill, a person should not have to venture out into public for food, water, medicine or other supplies, and ask people to checkup on you by phone. Vaccine is not yet available for H1N1.

For additional information on the H1N1 influenza virus go to the following web site:-

www.greencountyhealth.org DOG NOTICE

Browntown residents can buy their yearly dog license at the Village Hall when paying taxes or any time in December and January.

The information needed is dog breed, color, and rabies shot vaccination certificate. Male and female dogs cost $9.00 and neutered or spayed dogs cost $4.00. State law dictates that all dogs above six months of age must have a license. Green County Clerk is asking for a list of all dogs in the Village even if they do not have a license.
